ARRABALS

Vélez-Málaga
The suburbs were located around the streams known today as San Sebastián and La Molineta, where the urban development of Andalusian origin is still evident. During the Nasrid period they experienced great growth. They had protective barriers with some access gates that were closed in case of danger. The conquest of the city in 1487 by Ferdinand the Catholic took place in this area outside the city walls because it lacked the necessary protection. As in other cities such as Granada and Malaga, the North African tribe of the Gumara, who were in charge of defending the city, settled in one part of the suburbs.
