Algarrobo celebrates its history with a historical re-enactment, accompanied by a weekend of festivities that includes food tastings, a craft market, a tapas trail and live music.<\/p>\n
The story takes us back to 1811, specifically to 24 September, when Napoleon\u2019s army was ordered to burn down this village in the Axarqu\u00eda region. To this end, Commander Bellang\u00e9 arrived in the village at the head of a company from the 58th Regiment, whilst one of the columns commanded by Captain Ricard was ambushed in Algarrobo \u2013 on 23 September \u2013 resulting in the deaths of 12 French soldiers.<\/p>\n
Bellang\u00e9\u2019s response was immediate, and the very next day he set out with his entire army in search of the man responsible for those deaths, Jos\u00e9 Segovia, whom he never managed to capture. The fact is that the guerrilla groups of bandits<\/strong> who were in power at the time were able to stand up to the armies of that era.
