{"id":2034,"date":"2025-03-12T20:44:54","date_gmt":"2025-03-12T20:44:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/turismoaxarquiacostadelsol.com\/?post_type=que-hacer&#038;p=2034"},"modified":"2025-07-27T19:18:55","modified_gmt":"2025-07-27T17:18:55","slug":"church-of-santa-maria-la-mayor","status":"publish","type":"que-hacer","link":"https:\/\/turismoaxarquiacostadelsol.com\/en\/que-hacer\/iglesia-de-santa-maria-la-mayor\/","title":{"rendered":"Church of Santa Mar\u00eda la Mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<b>church of Santa Mar\u00eda la Mayor<\/b>also known as\u00a0<b>church of Santa Mar\u00eda de la Encarnaci\u00f3n<\/b>is a catholic church located in the historic centre of V\u00e9lez-M\u00e1laga.<\/p>\n<p>This Gothic-Mudejar building, built in the early 16th century, was erected on the site of the former aljama mosque of the Muslim city. It has three naves without transept, with a presbytery in the southern part, separated by Almohad-inspired chamfered pillars, from which pointed arches start.<\/p>\n<p>Special mention should be made of the altarpiece of the main altar, a 16th century Renaissance style work, mutilated in its sculptural part, it has an important historical-artistic value, where the carving of the crucified Christ, called Cristo de los Vig\u00edas, stands out. Its central theme is the mystery of the Incarnation, in order to exalt Christ's dual nature, human and divine.<\/p>\n<p>Its Mud\u00e9jar frames are of special importance, the one in the central nave is of pair and knuckle, decorated with a ribbon on the gualdas and the battlement.
