{"id":3080,"date":"2025-03-21T11:17:34","date_gmt":"2025-03-21T11:17:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/turismoaxarquiacostadelsol.com\/?post_type=que-hacer&#038;p=3080"},"modified":"2026-08-03T13:33:45","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T11:33:45","slug":"fortress-velez-malaga","status":"publish","type":"que-hacer","link":"https:\/\/turismoaxarquiacostadelsol.com\/en\/que-hacer\/fortaleza-velez-malaga\/","title":{"rendered":"V\u00e9lez-M\u00e1laga Fortress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Situated at the highest point in the city, some 80 metres above sea level, <strong>This medieval castle was built in the 10th century<\/strong> and it came to the fore during the 14th and 15th centuries, becoming one of the most important fortresses in the Nasrid kingdom.<br \/>\nIts location is a key factor, <strong>overlooking the V\u00e9lez plain and large parts of the Axarqu\u00eda<\/strong>, and its natural defences, which are easily defended and reinforced by a walled enclosure, covering some 1,500 square metres, which follows the contours of the land and is reinforced by small, solid turrets. <strong>The surviving original walls date from the 13th and 15th centuries<\/strong> and are built using rammed lime and sand, with the exterior clad in courses of masonry and brick piers.<br \/>\nWith the French invasion, between 1808 and 1810, f<strong>It was refurbished and subsequently ceased to serve a military purpose<\/strong> which led to its complete abandonment and subsequent deterioration.
