{"id":4287,"date":"2025-06-04T09:27:32","date_gmt":"2025-06-04T07:27:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/turismoaxarquiacostadelsol.com\/?post_type=que-hacer&#038;p=4287"},"modified":"2026-08-03T11:52:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T09:52:03","slug":"old-card-factory","status":"publish","type":"que-hacer","link":"https:\/\/turismoaxarquiacostadelsol.com\/en\/que-hacer\/antigua-fabrica-de-naipes\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Playing Card Factory (Industrial Heritage)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Macharaviaya Playing Card Factory was <strong>owned by the G\u00e1lvez family,<\/strong> comprising five siblings who took part in the <strong>American adventure.<\/strong> This opened up a channel of communication between the New World and the municipality, to the extent that it became known as the<strong> \u2018Little Madrid\u2019. <\/strong>The G\u00e1lvez brothers, particularly Jos\u00e9 and Miguel, were the patrons behind the establishment of the Royal Playing Card Factory in Macharaviaya, who <strong>They tried to establish a major driver of development in their home town.<\/strong> The contractor responsible for the construction and commissioning of this major Enlightenment project was the Italian engineer and businessman F\u00e9lix Solesio.<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Playing Card Factory of Macharaviaya <strong>is situated in the centre of that town<\/strong>, on Calle Real, next to the parish church of San Jacinto. It is situated along that street, on the left-hand side, on the same side as the church. The surroundings of the playing-card factory are exceptionally beautiful, as it forms part of a typical townhouse from the Age of Enlightenment.<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Playing Card Factory of Macharaviaya <strong>held a monopoly on this product<\/strong> for sale in the Americas two centuries ago. Production stood at <strong>30,000 decks per year,<\/strong> made from a special type of paper which was initially sourced from Barcelona and Genoa, although, a few years later, the paper began to be produced in Benalm\u00e1dena. However, with regard to that production, some experts claim that the majority of it<strong> He never reached his destination<\/strong>, which is why the decks would spend months in the ports of C\u00e1diz and M\u00e1laga, where they would eventually rot due to the damp.
