This is the mihrab arch, a niche, or recess, which was situated on the qibla wall of the Muslim place of worship, which was normally oriented towards Mecca. This mihrab belonged to a small neighbourhood mosque that stood in the former suburb of Los Gomeres, outside the walls of the ancient Andalusian medina of Balish (Vélez).

Its façade is characterised by a slightly pointed horseshoe arch, opening onto a small niche, which originally had a concave floor plan but was altered during the renovation of the house in the 16th century following the conquest of the city.

It belongs to an old mosque, It is a true gem both nationally and internationally, and still retains the original materials dating from the time of its construction in the 13th and 14th centuries.

In 2006, the City Council restored the building and the inner courtyard where this Nasrid arch, dating from the 13th–14th centuries, was discovered in 1995.

The main significance of the arch is that it and its architectural decoration have been preserved almost in their entirety, It also provides information on what the neighbourhood mosques and houses of the Nasrid period may have looked like.

This mihrab is listed in the Catalogue of Historic and Artistic Monuments of Andalusia, and it also appears in the Land Distribution Register for the town of Vélez-Málaga, which mentions a further 16 mosques.

It is characterised by rich plasterwork and consists of lobed voussoirs arranged in a radial pattern, with profuse decoration featuring arabesque interlacing in the form of finger-like palmettes. The arch is framed by an alfiz, the sides of which are covered by an epigraphic band bearing a passage from the Qur’an.

The arch is formed by a set of 11 radial voussoirs with a lobed shape, and each keystone is adorned with double and single finger-like palmettes, in an excellent example of arabesque work, featuring a text of stylised characters proclaiming the oneness of God (“There is no god but God”). In the centre of the spandrels are circular cartouches expressing the prophetic mission of Muhammad (“… he is the Messenger of God”).

The entire complex is bordered by an alfiz featuring an epigraphic inscription that has been partially damaged by the alterations made to the house.

Based on the epigraphic and textual characteristics it can be dated to the second half of the 14th century

It is currently a tourist information point and can be visited during its opening hours: Mon-Sat 10-14:00h and 16-20:00h / Sun and Fri: 10-14:00h.

["post-4450","que-hacer","type-que-hacer","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
