Antonio Muñoz Cabrera Winery Museum (Dimobe)

In the vicinity of Moclinejo The Hoya de los Muertos and the Cuesta de la Matanza are well worth a visit. They were the the scene of the defeat of the Christian troops by the Adelantado of Antequera in his attempt to wrest these lands from the Arabs.

According to some historians, the name Moclinejo is derived from the Arabic word "Moclin", which means "place of district".

The municipality of Moclinejo, in the Axarquía region of Málaga (Costa del Sol), was the scene of a historic event of great significance in the course of the conquest, which gave its name to the Hoya de los Muertos or Cuesta de Matanza. In 1483, Mulay Hacen was dethroned from Granada and took refuge in the castle. The Arabs' provocative attitude upset the Christians, who tried to teach him a lesson, but the Arabs attacked with force from above and decimated the Christian army. The triumph gave Mulay Hacen great prestige.

Later, once it had been incorporated into the kingdom of the Catholic Monarchs, Moclinejo is experiencing something of a boom thanks to the cultivation of its vineyards; but these were destroyed following the phylloxera plague of 1878, which began in this municipality and later spread throughout the rest of the province of Málaga.

It is situated just two kilometres from the village of Moclinejo. Here lie the entrances to some mines which, according to local accounts, were silver mines and had to be closed because there was more water than they could drain, making the work difficult.

Exhibition Hall with a national and international projection dedicated to exhibitions belonging to the collection of the Segovia Lobillo Foundation, as well as local and national artists. It promotes the Los Viñeros Speed Painting Competition. It is situated in the heart of the village of Moclinejo.

The El Valdés House Museum (Moclinejo) It is a building constructed mainly from rubble. Antonio Montañez, a resident of the hamlet of El Valdés, has used his talent to transform these materials into a work of art that pays tribute to the land and local craftsmanship. The house was built as a tribute to his roots and to showcase local craftsmanship, with a particular focus on ceramics.

The House Museum of El Valdés is a private initiative that aims to revive and preserve the cultural and artistic heritage of the region. Its founder, Antonio Montañez, has brought together a fine selection of art from the Axarquía: from farming tools that are no longer in use and the most authentic 19th-century floor tiles, to a wide range of works by painters and sculptors from the Axarquía. Furthermore, the Axarquía House Museum pays a moving tribute to the stonemasons’ guild, with the creation of a children’s playground featuring ceramics and figures that allude to the stonemasons’ work and the influence they had in shaping the village’s landscape.

The Plaza de España is the nerve centre of the town and is where the most notable buildings are located. The Town Hall is located here.

From this emblematic square, you can access the town centre, which is of Arab origin and is laid out in narrow winding streets where the façades of some of the houses house images of saints.

These castle-shaped arches give access to Moclinejo, gateway to the Axarquia-Costa del Sol Raisin Route.
