ARRABAL ARCH

ARRABAL ARCH

Vélez-Málaga
This is an arch located in the middle of Calle Arroyo de San Sebastián (old suburb). It dates from after the conquest of 1487 but is undoubtedly of Andalusian tradition as it is an urban element that was very common in the farmhouses and medinas of al-Andalus, and which continued to be maintained during the Moorish period, reaching the present day. It can still be seen in many of our towns and cities, and also in the medinas of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. Its function was and still is to indicate the separation between different neighbourhoods or guild areas.
