LARGE SOURCE OF SANDS

Fountains are one of the most authentic and original elements of the Andalusian Axarquia. The fountain of Arenas was the main fountain of its farmstead and was located on the outskirts, next to the road to Vélez-Málaga. It appears in the Libro de Apeo y Repartimiento de Arenas of 1571. It owes its name to its large size. It is an alcubilla (from the Arabic al-qubbaya) or Andalusian water chest. A circular brick dome on pendentives rests on top of a cube inside. Its original roof was a hipped roof, but a remodelling in the 2000s transformed it, giving it a more Eastern-style dome.
