From the 11th century it was the main fortress in the area and served as a refuge for the population of the neighbouring farmhouses. In the 15th century it was the head of the Taha (district) until it was conquered in 1487. It occupies a splendid elevated site. In the upper part is the citadel with the remains of crenellated walls, four towers and two vaulted cisterns. In the lower part, surrounded by a rammed earth wall, is the albacar with a massive octagonal tower to protect the inhabitants and their livestock. It is mentioned in the 11th-century memoirs of the Zirid King Abdallah of Granada: 'I saw that it was a very large castle in which the inhabitants of the surrounding area had gathered.
