THE FARMSTEAD OF SALARES

THE FARMSTEAD OF SALARES

Salares
Salares has important Andalusian elements such as the bridge, the minaret and other remains of its mosque. It is the best preserved centre in the region as it is the least inhabited and the most isolated. Its architecture preserves construction techniques and know-how as a cultural legacy that has been adapted to the environment and climate. On the other side of the river that passes under the new avenue was the farmhouse of Benescalera, which had its own mosque and which disappeared after the Moorish rebellion in Axarquia. A Castilian document from 1484 tells how the old Mudejars of Salares, alfaquí, alguacil and aljama, “came out of their mosque to do their zalá”.
