CISTERN OF THE FORTRESS OF COMARES

CISTERN OF THE FORTRESS OF COMARES

Comares
Comares has an important Andalusian hydraulic heritage with numerous fountains, irrigation channels and cisterns. Its cistern is located in the esplanade of the current cemetery, within the enclosure of the old Andalusian fortress. Its origins can be traced back to those of the fortress (9th-10th centuries). It had the capacity to supply the military garrison and the population, and was used for survival in the event of a siege. It has a rectangular floor plan and is covered with a barrel vault. Its walls are waterproofed with red mortar.
