THE FORTRESS (HERMITAGE OF SANTA ANA)

Canillas de Albaida
The Ermita de Santa, at the highest point, is the most striking structure that can be seen when viewing Canillas de Albaida. It was originally the fortress of the Andalusian farmstead that protected the town and controlled the important pass towards the area of Granada. Proof of this is that from up close the current building reveals the remains of the unusual construction systems for a religious building that formed part of the old fortress. Among these elements, the entrance, presided over by tufa stone arches, which form a kind of uncovered porch, stands out powerfully.
