There are numerous historical sources in the municipality of Iznate. The Fuente del Gaitero is mentioned in the Repoblación de Vélez-Málaga II, fol. 118 v). However, the most outstanding fountains from past times, perhaps of Andalusian origin due to their similarity to others in La Axarquía, are the fountains of Icsimi and Moguera, both of which have been restored and landscaped nowadays. The former is situated at a higher altitude than the site of the old mosque of the alquería and probably supplied water to the town by means of a system of atanores.
