JARAL TOWER

JARAL TOWER

Jaral Tower
This is the only Andalusian coastal tower that still survives. Those that existed in Torre del Mar, Torrox and Nerja have been lost. It was built during the Nasrid period, probably during the reign of Sultan Muhammad V, who reorganised the coastal defence of the kingdom of Granada in the mid-14th century. It is rectangular in shape, with a width of more than five metres and a height of approximately ten metres. After the conquest in 1487, the tower retained its function as a coastal watchtower, but underwent important transformations that modified its original appearance.
