OLD MOSQUE (NOW THE HERMITAGE OF SAN SEBASTIÁN) OF CÓMPETA

Competa
The old parish church of Cómpeta is not the present church in the village square but another one located in the cemetery, which took advantage of the old mosque: the hermitage of San Sebastián. This old mosque underwent hardly any changes at first as it was used for Christian worship, but it was severely punished by the Moors during the revolt. Later, in 1570, it was adapted as a presidio (fortress or barracks) to control the Moorish rebels who had taken refuge in the Sierra. In 1577 it was rebuilt by the bishopric and, decades later, the new parish church was built, leaving the old mosque-church as a hermitage.
