El Alcázar Leisure Area (Alcaucín)

The Cortijo del Alcázar Controlled Camping Area It is situated in the heart of the Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park, within the municipality of Alcaucín, on the banks of the river of the same name. It is an area blessed with an abundance of water and vegetation, offering a wide variety of facilities for public use.

A must-see stop on some of the walking routes leading to the Pico de la Maroma, the highest peak in the Axarquía at 2,068 m, with excellent facilities for a day out in the countryside.

This is a large area where visitors have access to a range of facilities designed to enhance their enjoyment of the site. As well as barbecues, tables, benches and toilets, there are fountains, small waterfalls and lush vegetation, all of which add to the charm of this beautiful spot.

The small waterfalls that form in the first few metres of the course of this stream and the thick vegetation that surrounds it are some of the natural attractions of this charming spot. What catches the eye is the impressive gorge carved out by this stream metres further down, before its waters flow into the nearby La Viñuela reservoir. The best way to admire this natural canyon is to visit the viewing point set up beside the path. From there, you can see the beautiful shapes that erosion has carved out of the rockier sections of both the riverbed and the surrounding mountainous terrain.
