The stunning landscape of the Fábrica de la Luz is one of the finest examples of the Almijara, Tejeda and Alhama Mountains Natural Park. It is also one of the most naturally beautiful spots in the Axarquía. It is situated just three kilometres from the village of Canillas de Albaida.
The Controlled Camping Area It offers a range of designated areas for pitching tents, as well as barbecues, fountains (with untreated water), toilets and tables with benches. Its excellent location, at the junction of two virtually permanent watercourses and next to the start of the signposted trail: Fábrica de la Luz–Puerto de Cómpeta, it allows visitors to get up close to and observe the many species of flora and fauna that typically inhabit areas near the water, whilst also providing opportunities for walking in a setting of immense environmental value.
Today, the Canillas power station is in a state of complete disrepair, whilst its beautiful surroundings are well known to day-trippers and walkers.
The site is a recreational area, shaded by magnificent walnut trees, to which the crystal-clear waters of the River Turvilla lend great charm. The waters flow vigorously for most of the year, creating a beautiful scene amongst the eroded rocks and small waterfalls that provide their own soundtrack.
Nearby are the Cueva de las Piletas and the Cueva del Quejigo. Now one of the most charming recreational areas in the province, it is dotted with springs, and the constant murmur of water from the waterfalls of the Melero stream, surrounded by lush vegetation, make it an ideal spot for camping and a strategic starting point for various mountain and hiking trails that criss-cross the Natural Park, which runs alongside the river for its first few metres and then heads into the mountains until it reaches the Puerto de Cómpeta. The entire municipality of Canillas de Albaida is home to a variety of natural and environmental attractions. Numerous excursions can be undertaken from the village.
