Canillas de Albaida

Description

Located in the Axarquia region, it is a charming white village that stands out for its Moorish legacy, visible in its narrow, winding streets and the architecture of its whitewashed houses. Its name, derived from the Arabic "Albaida" meaning "white", refers to the abundance of white flowers in the area. Its historical heritage includes the 16th century church of Nuestra Señora de la Expectación and the chapels of Santa Ana and San Antón, which reflect its rich religious tradition. The municipality celebrates festivities such as Cultural Week, which combines art, sport and local traditions, and the festivities in honour of San Antón, patron saint of the village, where animals are blessed and typical dishes such as potaje de brisoles (brioche stew) are tasted. Surrounded by the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park, it offers natural sites such as the Fábrica de la Luz, ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling. Local gastronomy includes specialities such as migas de harina de maíz, choto frito and ajoblanco, as well as muscatel wines produced in small local wineries.
