A picturesque municipality in the Axarquia region of Malaga, it is notable for its deep historical and cultural legacy, closely linked to the influential Gálvez family. During the 18th century, this family promoted the development of the town, establishing the Royal Playing Card Factory, which came to produce more than 30,000 playing cards a year for the Spanish colonies in America. Bernardo de Gálvez, a native of Macharaviaya, played a crucial role in the independence of the United States, leading the conquest of cities such as Mobile and Pensacola. In recognition of his contribution, the municipality celebrates every 4th of July a festival commemorating American independence, with historical re-enactments and period parades. The town's cultural heritage includes the San Jacinto Church and the Galvez Museum, dedicated to preserving and disseminating local history. In addition, in August, during Cultural Week, the patron saint San Bernardo is honoured with various artistic and traditional activities. This commitment to culture has been recognised by the Diputación de Málaga, which awarded Macharaviaya Town Council the Garrido Moraga Prize for Malaga Culture in 2024.
