El Borge

Description

Known as the "capital of the sultana", it is a picturesque village of Moorish origin located in the Axarquia region of Malaga. Its narrow, winding streets, adorned with whitewashed houses, reflect its Andalusian heritage. The municipality is famous for its production of muscatel sultanas, a traditional crop that has been recognised as an Important System of World Agricultural Heritage (SIPAM) by the FAO. Its heritage includes the Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, built in the 16th century on the site of a former mosque, and the Fuente del Cuerno (Fountain of the Horn), of Muslim origin. El Borge is also known for being the birthplace of Luis Muñoz García, nicknamed "El Bizco de El Borge", one of Andalusia's most famous bandits in the 19th century; his birthplace has been transformed into a hotel-restaurant-museum that houses a collection on Andalusian banditry. Every year, on the third Sunday in September, the Día de la Pasa (Raisin Day) is held, a festival that pays tribute to this emblematic product with tastings, music and demonstrations of traditional grape harvesting. In addition, on 31 October, the town commemorates the Noche de Ánimas (Night of the Souls) with a themed route that takes in characters from Spanish folklore, vindicating local traditions in the face of foreign influences. The local gastronomy includes dishes such as ajoblanco, gazpacho and chivo al ajillo (goat with garlic), complemented with home-made muscatel wines.
