Torrox

Description

Located in the Axarquia region of Malaga, it is a municipality that stands out for its rich cultural and historical heritage. Its origins date back to a Roman factory town called Caviclum, renowned for the production of garum, a fish sauce highly appreciated in ancient Rome. During the Muslim domination, Torrox established itself as a silk-producing centre, boosted by the planting of mulberry trees, and later, in the Christian era, monuments such as the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, built on the site of an ancient mosque, were erected. The municipality celebrates various festivities that reflect its cultural identity, such as Migas Day, declared a Fiesta of National Tourist Interest, where homage is paid to this traditional dish. Torrox is also known for its subtropical climate, which favours the cultivation of tropical fruits such as avocados, mangoes and custard apples, contributing to a varied and delicious local gastronomy. These traditions and monuments consolidate Torrox as a cultural reference in the province of Malaga.
