Colmenar lies in the centre of the historic region of the "Montes de Málaga", nestled between two hills. This municipality is on the border between the Axarquia region, which it joins through the Periana corridor, and the Montes region, which it joins from the west; it is located next to the old road to Granada. It offers a different landscape depending on which way you look at it: rocky mountains to the north and south and olive and cereal lands to the east and west.
Colmenar is rural tourism and mountainous natureculture and Andalusian authenticity. The village whose origins date back to after the Christian conquest, It features a network of narrow, gently sloping streets that retain their original Arab layout, along with low, whitewashed houses. Its most iconic monument is the Church of the Assumption, and its most scenic areas are the Sierra de Camarolos and the Sierra del Jobo.
A must-see is the Viewpoint from the Candelaria Chapel, one of the highest points in the Axarquía, from where you can enjoy the splendid landscape including Riogordo and the La Viñuela Reservoir, and the Honey Museum.
Colmenar is one of the seven municipalities that make up the Oil and Mountains Route, which offers us spectacular changes in scenery, a reservoir surrounded by mountains and pretty mountain villages perched high above the Mediterranean.
