Trayamar, one of the most important necropolises in the Western Mediterranean

Prehistoric sites dating from the end of the Neolithic period (3rd millennium BC) have been found in the area known as Cueva de Algarrobo. However, the most notable archaeological remains can be dated to between the 8th and 5th centuries B.C. in the area of the Morro de Mezquitillaand correspond to settlements of Punic colonisers.

In 1967, Professors Schubart and Niameyer from the German Archaeological Institute discovered at a site near the coast called Trayamar a series of tombs (8th century BC), which is the most important Palaeopunic site on the Western Mediterranean coast. Trayamar is open to the public and the grave goods it contained are kept in the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Málaga.
