Independence Day

Macharaviaya celebrates every 4th of July the festivities of the independence from the United States. A celebration with obvious American inspiration that finds its justification in the very history of the town. This village in Malaga commemorates the contribution of its countryman, Bernardo de Gálvez, to American independence because, by leading the colonists against the British in Florida, he won the Battle of Pensacola.

Born in 1746 and appointed governor of Louisiana in 1776, his intervention was considered so decisive for American independence that he marched in the victory parade with George Washington through the streets of Philadelphia.

Among the activities that take place during the festival are the military-historical re-enactments and parades by the Grenadiers and Ladies of Gálvez and Torrijos Associations 1831 as well as a tasting of the typical mead liqueur, a fermentation of honey drunk by Spanish troops at the time. The events are rounded off with music, a period costume competition, documentary film screenings, a traditional American barbecue and fireworks.
