Vélez-Málaga is the capital of the Axarquía.
Vélez-Málaga is the largest municipality in the eastern part of the Costa del Sol, with more than 150 square kilometres of territory and almost 25 kilometres of coastline. Its population resides in the scattered villages of Almayate, Cajiz, Valle-Niza, Benajarafe, Chilches, Lagos, Mezquitilla, Trapiche and Triana, although its main centres are Vélez-Málaga, Torre del Mar and Caleta de Vélez.
Among the most significant monuments are The Fortress The city's Moorish architecture and walls, as well as its religious heritage with churches built on the site of ancient mosques: Church of Santa María de la Encarnación, Church of San Juan Bautista, Las Claras, Convent of Las Carmelitas, Convent of San Francisco or the different chapels and hermitages, among which the most outstanding is the Cerro de San Cristóbal, sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Los Remediospatron saint of the city.
It has much to offer, with a rich history that spans almost 3000 years.
