The Sierra de Almijara, sister of the Sierra de Tejeda, has an abrupt and rugged landscape, with high mountains close to the sea and deep ravines. Its vegetation is dominated by scrubland, repopulated pines and remnants of native holm oak forest in the higher areas. Depending on the degree of soil degradation, different types of scrubland can be found, such as rockrose, thyme and pine forests. Above an altitude of 1,700 m, thorny bushes known as "Asiento de la monja" (Nun's Seat) predominate. The fauna is rich, with numerous endemic species, amphibians such as toads and frogs, reptiles such as snakes and lizards, and birds such as eagles and kestrels. There are also mammals such as foxes, weasels and mountain goats.
