ANDALUSÍ ALGORFA OF ARENAS

ANDALUSÍ ALGORFA OF ARENAS

Sands
The algorfa (from the Arabic al-gurfa, the room) is a characteristic element in the urban planning of the medinas and farmhouses of al-Andalus, and still exists in many towns and cities in Spain. The Arenas room had the function of linking two dwellings, perhaps belonging to the same owner and located in adjacent buildings on either side of the same street, something common when, for example, a son married. It could have been used as a transit corridor, a separate room or even a barn or storeroom. It also has the structural function of strengthening the load-bearing walls. Passing through the Algorfa de Arenas is a journey back in time to the essence of an Andalusian farmhouse.
