ANDALUSÍ MINARET OF VÉLEZ-MALAGA

ANDALUSÍ MINARET OF VÉLEZ-MALAGA

Vélez-Málaga
It was built in the 13th-14th centuries and formed part of the great mosque of the suburb located next to the cemetery, which was destroyed after the conquest to build the Church of Santiago. Only part of the minaret was preserved when it was converted into a bell tower. It is currently part of the private quarters of the convent of San Francisco. From the street, through a window, you can see part of its beautiful sebka panels (a network of interlaced rhomboid shapes) of Almohad origin with polychrome plant motifs and inlaid tiles, similar to those of the Giralda in Seville or the Kutubía in Marrakech.
