FORTRESS OF COMARES "LA TAHONA".

FORTRESS OF COMARES "LA TAHONA".

Comares
The Andalusian fortress or hisn of Comares was built during the 9th-10th centuries. During the Nasrid period it must have extended around the present-day town centre. Today only the remains of two towers (Tahona grande and Tahona chica) and scattered fragments of the walls are preserved. It was of great importance during the fitna or Christian rebellion of the 10th century led by Omar Ben Hafsun against the Cordovan Caliph Abderrahman III, which is recounted in the work al-Muqtabis by Ibn Hayyan. In it we can read: "...sending against Comares, the chief of them, an army of furious champions who fought his people until they left the field and hid in the fortress".
