THE MELILLA OF TORROX

THE MELILLA OF TORROX

Torrox
Castile's control of Melilla in September 1497 was the result of negotiations between two Muslim constables of this North African town, Andrés and Lorenzo de Melilla, and the direct collaborators of the Catholic Monarchs. The constables were rewarded with land and houses in Torrox, where they endured many hardships. Lorenzo returned to Melilla where he was assassinated, but Andrés managed to prosper. Andrés' sons were responsible for the construction of the first sugar mill in La Axarquía, the Ingenio Bajo. One of them was a leader in the Moorish rebellion, García "el Meli".
