MOLINA TOWER

MOLINA TOWER

Vélez-Málaga
It is visible from afar and its height and impregnable character are surprising. It was one of the main defensive towers on the wall. Its function was to control and watch over the whole of the south and part of the east, and to connect the interior of the medina with the suburbs through a gateway. Even today, its foundations show how wide it must have been in its day. Recent reconstructions have significantly changed its original appearance and it is now reduced to a mere ornamental tower with a lookout point at the top. Its name comes from a later date and may have its origin in a Jewish family, the Molina family, who lived nearby.
