MUDEJAR OF THE CHURCH OF SANTA MARÍA

MUDEJAR OF THE CHURCH OF SANTA MARÍA

Vélez-Málaga
The main church of Santa María de la Encarnación was built around 1520 on the site of the old aljama mosque of the Andalusian city, and was the first Christian temple in La Axarquía after the conquest. Inside and in the cloister you can enjoy a marvellous example of Mudejar art in the spectacular wooden coffered ceilings decorated with geometric lacework, the brickwork of its arches and the scarce and valuable remains of tiles that can be seen on the two upper steps of the altar, which should be highlighted. It served as a model for the other Mudéjar churches that were built in the region during the 16th century.
