ANCIENT JEWISH QUARTER

ANCIENT JEWISH QUARTER

Vélez-Málaga
Until the conquest of Balish (Vélez-Málaga) on 27th April 1487, the Jews were able to live protected by the walls that enclosed the medina. The Jewish presence prior to the conquest is documented in the books of repartimientos where reference is made to the Synagogue of the Judería Vieja (Old Jewish Quarter) located near the present-day Calle Almudena. Nothing remains of it. After the conquest, the Jews were moved to the suburb, outside the walls, where they remained for only five years when they were expelled in 1492. The names of Jewish families such as the Cohens, Molina, Peres, Abenzaon, Muysén, Gumis, Vidales, Levi, Ojuelos, Acara, Chenquetilla and Aben Himon, among others, are documented.
