ROYAL DOOR

ROYAL DOOR

Vélez-Málaga
Of the four gates that gave access to the medina (three main gates with barbicans and another smaller one), this is the only one that has survived. It is a defensive gateway with a curved access that is incomplete today and with arches that were probably originally horseshoe arches. It was protected by a large rectangular tower that, like a watchtower, served as an advanced defence for access to the walled medina.
