SALAZAR TOWER

SALAZAR TOWER

Salazar Tower
This is an Andalusian tower built from the 11th century onwards. It formed part of a system of fortresses in the mountainous area immediately on the coast, which had a double function: to connect with the watchtowers and the coastal surveillance system, and to protect the farmhouses in case of possible danger. Some of these towers remain in the areas of Totalán, Rincón de la Victoria and Vélez-Málaga. Others have disappeared, such as those of Juncares, Simientes or Almayate Alto. After the conquest in 1487, the tower retained its function as a coastal watchtower and underwent important transformations.
