THE AUTA VALLEY

THE AUTA VALLEY

Cortijo de Auta
Omar ben Hafsún, leader of the revolt against the Umayyad state led from Bobastro (Mesas de Villaverde, Ardales) in the 9th-10th centuries, was born in the farmhouse of Turriyila, near the farmhouse of Auta. In the valley of Auta (Riogordo) many remains of those times of the fitna (revolt) are preserved, although in poor condition: the fortress of Auta, which since the 15th century has been a rural farmhouse, the necropolis excavated in the rock, the caves under the farmhouse where the Christian population lived, and the fortress of Turriyila.
