THE FAT FOUNTAIN AND THE CORACHA

THE FAT FOUNTAIN AND THE CORACHA

Comares
The "Qawraya" or coracha is a fortified road with a protected access. The one at Comares was built in the Nasrid period. It is a spur of the wall that was torn out of the general enclosure and advances towards the Fuente Gorda to ensure its protection and the supply of water to the population. The fountain has a perennial flow and its source is located at the top of the limestone crag of Comares. Since the time of al-Andalus, the surrounding lands have been irrigated with the surplus water from this public fountain, forming a series of biodiverse Andalusian orchards and gardens. The 14th-century scholar Ibn al-Khatib said of Comares that 'its water is crystalline'.
