THE FRIGILIANA RIDE

THE FRIGILIANA RIDE

Frigiliana
At midnight on Monday, 23 July 1548, the Moriscos of Frigiliana set off for Burriana beach in Nerja, where six galleys from Tetouan were waiting for them, to flee and start a new life in North Africa. They were unlucky. They were spotted by the guards at the lower castle of Nerja, who alerted the regulars of Vélez. The children were separated from their families and enslaved. Most of the men died, and those who survived, along with the women, were transferred to the Alhambra prison, where they underwent a long legal process that condemned them to a life of poverty and slavery.
