Between 1990 and 1995, archaeological excavations were carried out by the Junta de Andalucía. In 1996, the research was centralised at the European Centre for Prehistoric Research in Tautavel (France). Due to its complexity, this project has required the intervention of numerous national and international entities. The Zafarraya cave is small and not very comfortable. Its entrance is located to the south and a few metres from the cave there are outcrops of flint, which were once used by the Neanderthals. The Neanderthal human remains found in the cave are numerous, although most of them are fragmentary. Among the Neanderthal fossil bones from the Zafarraya cave, we should highlight those exhumed from inside the hearth, consisting of two femurs, a tibia and a mandible.
