Old Town

It dates back to the 15th century. It is a watchtower of Arab construction, to defend the lands of Zalia from possible invasions from the coast. The tower is built with slate rocks forming circular roofs with lime mortar. It preserves a corbel of the machicolation that defends a doorway located at a height of about 6.5 m, with brick jambs and a single-stone lintel, hiding the half-destroyed brick vault.
It is about 9.5 metres high and according to tradition it was built in one night with materials from the surrounding area and water from the river Guaro. It served as a communication point from other watchtowers along the coast and the castle of Zalia.
This tower had its partner on the Cerro Agudo, which today is destroyed; they marked the limit of the territory of Vélez. The watchtower ceased its watchtower functions when the Christian troops took Zalia in 1485.

The church of San José, in Mudejar style, was built in the 18th century (1731). With a very simple structure, it has a rectangular floor plan with a wooden roof. It was restored in the first third of the 18th century, and the belfry on the left of the main façade, also of very simple construction and housing a bell, dates from this period.

Park located at the south entrance of the village, recently refurbished. Very pleasant and equipped with swings, benches, fountains, outdoor ping-pong table and paddle tennis court. It also has a pond with ducks and an old oil mill.

La Viñuela has three archaeological sites, one at the hill of the Asperonesanother in the Castillejos and a third in the Herrera's workshop. Although La Viñuela is the most modern municipality in La Axarquía, its lands were among the first to know the presence of man.

From the Palaeolithic period, abundant traces have been found in the Llanos de Herrera and the terraces of the Guaro riverwhere today the La Viñuela reservoir is located. Before the waters of the reservoir covered the area, more than fourteen sites were excavated, ranging from the Neolithic to Roman times.

Built on the bed of the river Guaro and with contributions from the rivers Salia, Benamargosa, Bermuza, Rubite, and the Madre del Llano de Zafarraya stream. It has the largest capacity in the province of Malaga with 170 cubic hectometres, for a maximum reservoir height of 230 metres. It covers the valley that separates La Viñuela from Los Romanes, the surface area of the basin regulated by the river Guaro is 119 km2.

Its waters supply the irrigation of the south of the Axarquía and, in case of need, drinking water for the city of Málaga.

The area surrounding the reservoir is an area of great scenic wealth with facilities for water sports and a recreational area with barbecues, mini-golf and a football pitch. Another possibility, and one of the most popular, is fishing. In its waters, with the corresponding permit, you can catch carp, barbel and eels.

The name Verdieles refers to the "partio" of Verdiales, a region of Malaga where a variety of olive is grown, called verdial because it is still green when ripe.
