Description

In this municipality we find the Necropolis of Trayamar and the Morro de Mezquitilla.

  • Morro de Mezquitilla: Located on the river Algarrobo, it has been documented as a peninsula in Phoenician times. Its oldest remains correspond to the Chalcolithic, the most important occupation being from the archaic Phoenician period. There are also remains from the Roman period along with other findings from more recent times. The structures are mainly quadrangular dwellings and dwellings, and there are also ovens.
  • Necropolis of Trayamar: Trayamar is a Phoenician necropolis from the 7th century BC, located on the Algarrobo River. It is considered one of the most important Phoenician sites in the western Mediterranean. Here we can see the evolution of Phoenician funerary customs, from cremation to burial. The tombs found at Trayamar are underground "hypogeum" chambers with a lintelled doorway accessed through a "dromos" passageway sealed with ashlars. The walls of the hypogeum were made of stone ashlars and wooden columns that supported a gabled roof.
