Located at the highest point of the town, some 80 metres above sea level, this medieval castle was erected in the 10th century and acquired its greatest importance during the 14th and 15th centuries, being one of the most important citadels of the Nasrid kingdom. Its decisive element is its location, overlooking the fertile plain of Vélez and large areas of La Axarquía, and its easy natural defence, which is reinforced by a walled enclosure of some 1,500 square metres, which adapts to the terrain, reinforced by small solid cubes.
