La Fuente Street

Description

It is the main thoroughfare of the municipality; it runs through it from one end to the other, and most of the other streets lead off it, forming the boundary between the upper and lower districts. It takes its name because It is the path that leads to the Arab Fountain.

Cútar is home to one of the few remaining ‘algorfas’ – or covered passageways – in the province of Málaga.

It is a former Arab granary, which now connects two streets.

Arab Fountain or Fountain of Paradise

To the south of the village lies a a square structure with openings, topped by a vault on the inside, where the Arab fountain is located. It is in perfect condition and is the only one of its kind to have been found in the area.

According to 16th-century documents, it was known as «Aina Alcaharia», which means the Alquería Fountain. This a symbol of abundant water resources from the area has come to be used as one of the town’s promotional slogans, «Fuente del Paraíso», since, as recorded in municipal documents, As many as twelve springs were recorded within the town centre.

The Parish Church of the Virgen de la Encarnación is the main monument of Cútar and stands out for its combination of Mudejar, Baroque and Rococo styles. With three naves separated by brick arches and a wooden ceiling, its architecture reflects the different stages of its history.

The municipality also conserves other elements of interest, such as a fountain of Arab origin and archaeological sites in the Peña de Hierro, which provide evidence of ancient prehistoric settlements in the area.
