Chestnut Day (Alcaucín)

The Axarquía village of Alcaucín still celebrates one of its most popular festivals: Chestnut Day.

In days gone by, the village square would bring the locals together to celebrate All Saints’ Day, a day on which every family would bring a delicacy – and, given the time of year, this was usually chestnuts harvested in the local area. Today, this village in the Axarquía pays tribute to this ancient tradition and to autumn’s star produce: the chestnut.

Festival declared to be of Provincial Tourist Interest during which more than 300 kilos of roasted chestnuts and 250 kilos of roasted sweet potatoes are handed out to those attending, along with sweet and dry aniseed liqueur and shortbread. The day’s events are enlivened by musical performances.
