In view of the urban and population growth of Torre del Mar in the 1960s, it was decided to demolish the old neo-Mudéjar church in order to build a new modernist temple. This basilica-shaped building, in accordance with the precepts of Vatican II, stands out for its simple, austere and diaphanous design, with no pillars or intermediate columns to obstruct the view of the altar. The traditional decorative elements were reduced to a minimum in order to emphasise the figures of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary, with an impressive carving of the Crucified Christ by the Sevillian artist Francisco Buiza Fernández.
