The site was a quarry in the 18th century, from which stones were extracted to build the Roman Theatre and the Cathedral of Málaga, the Cervantes House in Vélez, the Phoenician necropolis of Trayamar, as well as numerous farmhouses and houses in the area around Torre del Mar. In this archaeological site is the Ermita de los Canteros, built in 1739 to provide spiritual assistance to the quarry workers. The chapel is made entirely of ashlar masonry, except for the roof, which is made of wood. Now restored, the hermitage serves as a stone interpretation centre. The tourist and cultural revitalisation project seeks to enhance the historical and artistic heritage of the Archaeological and Monumental Complex of the old quarries of Valle Niza. The Almayate quarry stands out for having supplied part of the raw material for the construction of Malaga Cathedral and the Marqués Castle, which highlights its heritage and historical interest.
