Torre del Mar Lighthouse

The original church, Mudejar Gothic, was built in 1487 on the site of an old medieval mosque. At the beginning of the 16th century it underwent a remodelling and its impressive bell tower was built at this time.
The church has three naves with six bays, the central nave being the tallest and widest, separated by semicircular arches, which rest on pillars on the fronts of which are pilasters with recesses.
The major alterations it underwent in the mid-19th century led to its interior and façades being transformed into a neoclassical church. These works were promoted by the Velez lawyer Federico Vahey, who was Isabel II's Minister of Grace and Justice, who ordered the construction of the funerary chapel consecrated to the dedication of San Federico, today known as the chapel of Cristo de los Vigías.
The Civil War deprived this temple of important Baroque sculptures. Nowadays, images are venerated in processions during Holy Week, the most important of which is Our Lady of Sorrows, a carving from 1750.
On the main altar there is a large wall, of excellent quality, painted by the Velez painter Francisco Hernández, showing a triumphant, risen Jesus, surrounded by the four evangelists.

It is a small shrine, with semicircular arches on different sides, which houses a simple cross inside.

Dedicated to the Cross, which commemorates the entry of King Ferdinand into the city on 3 May 1487. Of the five that were erected, only two, this one and the one of the Lamb, are still standing today.

It was erected in the mid-17th century, on the summit of the Cerro de San Cristóbal, although it underwent important reforms later on. The ancient image of Our Lady of the Remedies was brought in 1592 from the capital of Granada, and the numerous miracles attributed to the image meant that it had to be exposed to public worship. Its interior has a Latin cross floor plan with a tribune-chorus at the base, and the main nave and the transept are covered with a half-barrel vault. We highlight the mural paintings of Felipe V and Maria Luisa de Saboya, as well as the coats of arms of the city of Vélez-Málaga and the Bourbon monarch that can be found in the oval medallions of the pendentives. Special mention should be made of the chapel, which has a square floor plan, where the Sacred Image of the Virgin, attributed to Martín de Aldehuela, is located.

At the end of the last century, the Velez painter Evaristo Guerra decorated the interior walls of the Hermitage using the fresco technique, painting different landscapes and constructions in his characteristic style, which has come to be known as the "transparent hermitage", as its walls reveal the entire landscape and urban context of Velez-Malaga.

It belonged to a Nasrid mosque and is characterised by its rich plaster decoration. It is made up of lobed voussoirs in a radial arrangement, profusely decorated with arabesque and palmette-shaped decoration. The arch is framed by an alfiz, the sides of which are covered by an epigraphic band with Qur'anic text.

It is currently a tourist information point and can be visited during its opening hours: Mon-Sat 10-14:00h and 16-20:00h / Sun and Fri: 10-14:00h.

It was built in the 16th century. It has a circular basin, with highlighted squares and in its centre a bulbous shaft continues above the plate, both fluted and with four masks, which give access to the spouts.

It was originally founded at the beginning of the 16th century in the old neighbourhood of La Villa, but due to its small size and poor conditions it was moved to its current location, called La Concepción. As the image of Nuestra Sra. de Gracia was older and was also donated by the Catholic Monarchs, the name of the convent was changed to the one we know today.

The current church was built in 1555, and its most interesting artistic features are the rectangular cloister, surrounded by a two-storey gallery of semicircular arches, and its Baroque church (late Baroque style with Rococo ornamentation), built in the 18th century.
